Don't Worry Be Happy - Guy Sebastian

Don't Worry Be Happy

I was driving, driving, driving down the 101
Singing 'California Dreaming' at the top of my lungs
Unaware, not a care
And then he appeared

Thought he was winding down his window just to say 'hello'
But he started cussing at me, saying I'm going too slow
Then he yelled "Go to Hell"
And flipped me the bird

Is it really that bad?
Really that bad
I don't think it's really that bad
Come on, get with it

If you only think of things that you haven't got
You could have it all and still never have enough
So don't worry (don't worry), be happy (be happy)

And if you're trying to make a move
But you're stuck in mud, under water
And you don't know which way's up
Yeah, don't worry (don't worry), be happy (be happy)

Another day, another plane, another interview
Just trying hard to get thru my list of things to do
What's the use, might fake the flu
Coz I've had enough

That's it - screw the low carbs, where's my KFC?
Ain't gonna think about the bills or the GFC
Life is short - live it up
Coz we live it once

Is it really that bad?
Really that bad
I don't think it's really that bad
Come on, get with it

If you only think of things that you haven't got
You could have it all and still never have enough
So don't worry (don't worry), be happy (be happy)

And if you're trying to make a move
But you're stuck in mud, under water
And you don't know which way's up
Yeah, don't worry (don't worry), be happy (be happy)

Yeah life is short
We only get to live it once
So live and love
And give it all you've got
Yeah life is short
We only live it once
So live it up

Yeah life is short
We only get to live it once
So live and love
And give it all you've got
Yeah life is short
We only live it once
So live it up

Is it really that bad?
Yeah I don't think it's really that bad
If you only think of things that you haven't got
You could have it all and still never have enough
So don't worry (don't worry), be happy (be happy)

And if you're trying to make a move
But you're stuck in mud, under water
And you don't know which way's up
Don't worry (don't worry), be happy (be happy)

So don't worry (don't worry), be happy (be happy)
Don't worry (don't worry), be happy
Be happy, yeah
Don't worry, be happy, don't worry, be happy
Be happy, yeah

Lyrics from azlyrics

A great fun song that drives home the point that worrying about life will get you no-where. As the Master Himself said
'  Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry , saying ,'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.'  Matthew 6:25-34

'40' U2

This song is based on Psalm 40 in the Bible.

The lyrics are :

I waited patiently for the Lord
He inclined and heard my cry
He lift me up out of the pit
Out of the mire and clay

I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song

How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song?
How long...how long...how long...
How long...to sing this song

He set my feet upon a rock
And made my footsteps firm
Many will see
Many will see and hear

I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song

(Sing it!)

How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song?
How long...how long...how long...
How long...to sing this song

Heaven - LIVE

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that me are without excuse.
Romans 1:20

The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. Psalm 19:1-4

Heaven Live

You don't need no friends
get back your faith again
you have the power to believe
another dissident
take back your evidence
it has no power to deceive

I'll believe it when I see it, for myself

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset and I perceive

I sit with them all night
everything they say is right
but in the morning they were wrong
I'll be right by your side
come hell or water high
down any road you choose to roam

I'll believe it when I see it for myself

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset and I perceive, yeah

darling, I believe, Oh Lord
sometimes it's hard to breathe, Lord
at the bottom of the sea, yeah yeah

I'll believe it when I see it for myself

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset and I perceive

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven
I look at my daughter, and I believe.
I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sunset
I can see the sunset
I can see the sunset
I don't need no one
Ohhhh
I don't need no one
I don't need no one
I don't need no one
To tell me about heaven
I believe
I believe it, yeah

U2 - Gloria

While this song is not exactly 'modern', one could argue that it definitely falls into the category of a 'pop' hymn, which is timeless.

When I first heard this song in the 80's, I thought it was about a girl called Gloria, because I didn't know latin, and I didn't have access to modern day tools like google translate.

If you translate the latin, you get something like:

Glory be to thee, O Lord
Glory be glad

When the lyrics talk about trying to stand up, but not being able to it reminds me of stories in the Bible of the manifest glory of God  'When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. The priests could not enter the temple of the LORD because of the glory of the LORD filled it. When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying 'He is good; his love endures forever.'

The lyrics about trying to speak up, and 'Oh Lord, loosen my lips', remind me of Isaiah's encounter with the LORD. 'Woe is me!' I cried, 'I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips.... and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD almighty.' Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, 'See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.'

Then there is also the reference to the door being open, and 'You're standing there, you let me in'.
This reminds me of Jesus saying 'I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.'

Gloria by U2 is a beautiful song of worship.

Gloria...
I try to sing this song
I, I try to stand up
But I can't find my feet
I try, I try to speak up
But only in you I'm complete
Gloria...in te domine
Gloria...exultate
Gloria...Gloria
Oh Lord, loosen my lips

I try to sing this song
I, I try to get in
But I can't find the door
The door is open
You're standing there
You let me in

Gloria...in te domine
Gloria...exultate
Oh Lord, if I had anything
Anything at all
I'd give it to you
I'd give it to you

Rihanna - We Found Love

Everyone is looking for love. When we do find love, it is worth singing about as Rihanna does so well.
But what does true love look like ?

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not
envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It
is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not
easily angered, it keeps no record of
wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but
rejoices with the truth. It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes, always per-
severs.
   Love never fails.

Just as Rihanna sings, sometimes it is when we hit rock bottom in that 'hopeless' place, that we realise what is important, and who is important.

WE FOUND LOVE - RIHANNA (feat. Calvin Harris)

It's like you're screaming, and no one can hear
You almost feel ashamed
That someone could be that important
That without them, you feel like nothing
No one will ever understand how much it hurts
You feel hopeless; like nothing can save you
And when it's over, and it's gone
You almost wish that you could have all that bad stuff back
So that you could have the good

Yellow diamonds in the light
Now we’re standing side by side
As your shadow crosses mine
What it takes to come alive

It’s the way I’m feeling I just can’t deny
But I’ve gotta let it go

We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place

Shine a light through an open door
Love a life I will divide
Turn away 'cause I need you more
Feel the heartbeat in my mind

It’s the way I’m feeling I just can’t deny
But I’ve gotta let it go

We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place

Yellow diamonds in the light
Now we’re standing side by side
As your shadow crosses mine

We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place

We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place

David Guetta - Without You Featuring Usher

David Guetta and Usher may not intend this song to be about someone declaring their dependance on God, and a desire to be with God, rather than without, but regardless of their intention, I redeem this song as a modern day hymn.

The famous songwriter of the ancient world, the legendary King David, often wrote of his desire to be in the presence of God.
'One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek:  that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life.' Psalm 27:4

He also pleads with God, not to forsake or reject him. 'Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior.' Psalm 27:9

Success is no success, if we are doing it without God.

Moses also acknowledged his desire not to do anything apart from God.
'If you Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? Exodus 33:15,16

DAVID GUETTA LYRICS

"Without You"
(feat. Usher)

I can't win, I can't reign
I will never win this game
Without you, without you
I am lost, I am vain,
I will never be the same
Without you, without you

I won't run, I won't fly
I will never make it by
Without you, without you
I can't rest, I can't fight
All I need is you and I,
Without you, without you

Oh oh oh!
You! You! You!
Without...
You! You! You!
Without...you

Can't erase, so I'll take blame
But I can't accept that we're estranged
Without you, without you
I can't quit now, this can't be right
I can't take one more sleepless night
Without you, without you

I won't soar, I won't climb
If you're not here, I'm paralyzed
Without you, without you
I can't look, I'm so blind
I lost my heart, I lost my mind
Without you, without you

Oh oh oh!
You! You! You!
Without...
You! You! You!
Without...you

I am lost, I am vain,
I will never be the same
Without you, without you
Without...you

God Put A Smile Upon Your Face - Coldplay

What I love about this song, is that Coldplay begin from a position of grace, acknowledging that God is the one who gives us grace, and puts joy in our hearts.
From this position of grace, the question is asked, 'Where do I go to fall from grace'?  Where do you draw the line?  It is not unusual for people to try and work out who is better or worse a person than each other, trying to understand moral boundaries.

The Apostle Paul wrote 'Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law' rather, through the law we become conscious of sin....there is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus' Romans 3:20-24

NOW THAT WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE !

Where do we go nobody knows?
I've gotta say I'm on my way down
God give me style and give me grace
God put a smile upon my face
Where do we go to draw the line?
I've gotta say I wasted all your time, (oh honey honey)
Where do I go to fall from grace?
God put a smile upon your face, yeah

Now, when you work it out I'm worse than you
Yeah, when you work it out I wanted to
Now, when you work out where to draw the line
Your guess is as good as mine

Where do we go nobody knows?
Don't even say you're on your way down, (when)
God gave you style and gave you grace
And put a smile upon your face, ah yeah

Now, when you work it out I'm worse than you
Yeah, when you work it out I wanted to
Now, when you work out where to draw the line
Your guess is as good as mine
Its as good as mine [x7]

Where do we go nobody knows?
Don't even say you're on your way down, (when)
God gave you style and gave you grace
And put a smile upon your face
